PBL Final Reflection

5/3/2010

PBL Final Reflection:

On the PBL project I learned very much about whales, for example for what whales come to Samana each year, and how they affect the Dominican Republic. Furthermore I learned about their bodies and movements, like what is breeching, etc. All these things were very interesting, and they have help me understand the economic development on the Dominican Republic. I think I know so much about whales that I can even say I am expert! Based on how it affects the Dominican Republic I've learned how they affect in a good and bad way the country. And learning this, is something very beneficial because it can help us in the future to solve economic problems in the Dominican Republic. I think that this topic have been one of the most interesting ones in my life. The only thing I didn't like about this project was the action plan because I didn't understand very well what was expected of it and what it structure was supposed to be. Otherwise, I did like everything else because it was very fun and interesting to learn, and there were many things I didn't know too. For example how Japan still hunt whales and why do they hunt them, how whale watching could be the most beneficial solution to stop killing whales, etc. Also I really liked the trip to Samana, and it was a wonderful experience as it was this project. I think I have learned very much, and I hope that in other classes I can learn as much as I did here. Sincerely, I think that this project was a wonderful experience and all these good things we've learned can be used in the future to help our country.

IWC reflection power point

25/2/2010

Even though I already know what the IWC was, I think is a good purpose making that organization. On websites I have read I can see what they have done, and is much. I really think that people need to follow the examples that organizations like the IWC are making. Because whales are our future; because we are going to make money with them without hurting them like we are doing now with whale watching. I also think that what the IWC is making for the whales is something very good. This is what I actually think about the information about the International Whaling Comision power point.

History of whaling:

I never knew the history of whaling, but I can see that people in the past weren't really intelligent; because they were wasting the chance of gaining money with whales without hurting them. Today I think everything is worst, they are in extinction because of what happened in the past. People continue hurting them instead of doing whale watching. I think that hurting them is something not too smart. Further more if they say that they kill them for scientific investigation purposes which is mostly a lie to the world. This is basically what I think about the history of whaling, although the power point was very interesting.

Reflection about shared process writing.

24/2/10

Up to now I have learned very much with this shared process writing. I have learned how to used information from websites without plagiarising, and how work with mates on my group. I think this has been very useful, and it will be more useful in the future. Also writing this paper with partners help me understand better things about whales and how to make money with them without hurting them. Even though we have had to put too much effort on it, it has been worthy. I really like this experience of writing a paper with partners and sharing it, and it had make the work more easy. I hope that in other classes we can also use this method of writing.

Reflection on trip

16/2/2010
Sebastian R.

Samana trip was a really good trip. I learned many things on the boat, eventhough I felt a little bit dizzy, but everything was worth it. I saw the whales breech for the first time and they were so near to the boat when they did that! Also it was my first time going to Cayo Levantado which was really nice, and I really liked it's enviroment. I had a lot of fun playing American futball with our teachers. There were many tourists in there, and they had happy faces which means they were happy in Cayo Levantado. Which is good news for Dominicans! But I didn't saw any tourists getting on the boat to see the whales. I guess it was too early for in the morning. Also I didn't know that around 200-500 tourists came to Samana each day! However I learned very much about the whales on the boat with Kim Beddal who gave us a warm welcome, and I really like the experience of seeing the Humpback whales, eventhough it was my first time. I hope someday I could take my family into there since they have never seen the whales. Again I really liked this awesome experience and I learned very much on it. I hope it can be repeated!

Reflection
About the chief seattle quote. I think this quote means that without beasts the man is not worth nothing because the man is going to feel extremly bad of emptiness on its spirit. And what ever it happens to the beast is going to happen to the man which I think that is something very true, because from extinction from other animals we have been affected too. Also imagine if we have not protect the humpback whales right know and they were extincted, that is going to affect us very much because we will loose money from tourism and other things. So I think that this phrase haves sense and I think that we should take the meaning of this phrase in mind and use it to solve problems with species that are in extinction.
Even though the movie "Star Trek: The Voyage Home" is a fictional movie it really gives a great message. It shows how whales are important and how we should protect them as they do. Today we can understand why the whales are so important. It's difficult to imagine how back in the 80's people that made the movie could understand why whales were so important and why we need to save them. Today we can see the reasons of it and I think that we need really need to make an action plan to stop those countries that continue hurting them to stop it. They need to understand that with whale watching we can earn more money and thus we can keep the whales alive without hurting it. Believe it or not some countries like the Dominican Republic earn about ten million dollars a year from whale watching which really affects in a positive way the Dominican economy. So I think that this movie really haves a great message and makes sense just as the chief phrase.
About the diversity code clip I think that it really makes sense how humans connect with all the other animals around and how if we affect them they are going to affect us. I did not understand how this works until the video showed me the web diagram. I will really like if this video could be expanded all over the world so that people could understand better how dangerous is to put animals under a threat. However going back to the clip I think that this clip was really good and comprehensable and it taught me in a good way how it affects humans putting in danger other animals. So you can relate how humpback whale will affect us negatively if we affect them negatively.
In conclusion, I think that all these thing taught me something great, and something that can change the world. I hope that these things (The phrase, clip, Star treck movie) can help everyone understand that animals are important.

Reflection on project 29/1/010

I think I am learning very much about this project and that it will help me very much on the future. For the reason that I am learning that we can gain money with animals without doing any harm to them. I think that the Dominican goverment should take note on that, and teach our Dominican citizens about that. This would make them know how special animals are, and reduce the extinction of some. The project is going very fine so far, and I hope I can learn more about it and answer my main question. Everyday I learn something new, and I take it and put it into my life. I teach other about it because I know that this new information is worthy and important. I am very excited to learn more in this project. As I said I think the project is going excellent.
